ID Genève uses wrist straps made from pressed grape residues

Geneva/Bayonne - ID Genève has issued a limited watch collection for the Circular 1 Garnet model. The wrist strap is made out of the new material Nisiar from the French company Mondin. It is created using residues from the wine industry in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape growing region.

ID Genève is presenting a limited 40-piece collection of its Circular 1 Garnet watch model. The first timepiece from the luxury watch manufacturer based in Geneva can now also be ordered with a wrist strap made from Nisiar. Deliveries start from September 2024. The stainless steel of the watch case is made from the waste of around 40 watch manufacturers in and around the Swiss canton of Jura. According to information provided by the company, the carbon footprint of this is ten times smaller than that of standard steel.

Nisiar is manufactured by Mondin, a company based in Bayonne, France. The new material consists of the N-07 variety of Nisiar. It is created from raw grape residues, called marc, from Château de Beaucastel, where the Perrin family produces wine. The tannins from the 13 grape varieties create a natural brown color. According to Co-Founder Rodolphe Mondin, the material combines “esthetics, performance, and eco-responsibility.” Mondin was founded in 2019 and scaled up production to an industrial level in 2024.

According to a press release from ID Genève, this material is characterized by the fact that it does not have any textile carrier. This provides it with a durability and longevity to rival that of animal leather. Each Nisiar variety can be traced back to a specific marc, which gives it its own color and texture.

Co-Founder of ID Genève Cédric Mulhauser commented: “With Nisiar, we have not only found a material of exceptional quality but also an extremely precise traceability that allows us to trace the exact journey of the grape marc from Château de Beaucastel to the watch strap. This transparency is the luxury of tomorrow.” ce/mm
