Boehringer Ingelheim acquires Evax
Zurich/Schlieren/Ingelheim - The German life sciences company Boehringer Ingelheim has acquired the Zurich-based Evax AG. The start-up is active in the development of horse vaccines.
(CONNECT) Evax AG from Zurich is now part of Boehringer Ingelheim, as detailed in a statement. Evax, which also has a subsidiary based at Bio-Technopark Schlieren-Zürich and was founded at the University of Zurich, develops horse vaccines used, for example, to treat allergic skin diseases. Evax will be integrated in the Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health division of the German life sciences firm.

Allergies and skin diseases that are hard to treat can really impact equine health. Therapeutic vaccines containing virus-like particles are designed to induce the horse’s immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies, which are then used to treat the underlying cause of the disease. “We’re excited to have the potential to offer horse owners the first innovative therapeutic option for allergic skin diseases targeting the underlying cause of the disease. This may result in a longer duration of action, better treatment outcomes, and increased convenience and compliance”, as Saskia Kley, Global Head of Equine for Boehringer Ingelheim, comments in the statement. ce/jh
