Clariant and Vertimass join forces to scale biofuel technology
Muttenz/Irvine - Clariant and Vertimass have agreed a strategic partnership in the area of biofuel production. Together, the two partners will seek to accelerate the development and commercialization of advanced zeolite catalysts for the conversion of biobased alcohols.
(CONNECT) Clariant, a specialty chemicals company from Muttenz in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland, has announced a strategic partnership with Vertimass, a company based in Irvine in the US State of California. The two companies intend to jointly accelerate the commercialization of the technology developed by Vertimass for the conversion of bio-based alcohols into liquid fuels. The partnership will also aim to scale advanced zeolite catalysts for the commercial production of biofuels.
The partnership combines Clariant’s long-standing experience in zeolite development with the Vertimass process for consolidated alcohols deoxygenation and oligomerization (CADO). The CADO technology facilitates the catalytic conversion of sustainable methanol, ethanol and other alcohols into liquid fuels compatible with existing vehicles and aircraft.
As part of this collaboration, Clariant will provide comprehensive technical support to Vertimass in order to advance the scaling and commercial production of the CADO technology.
The approach pursued by Vertimass to convert renewable alcohols into biobased fuels “has remarkable potential” in terms of commercial applications and environmental benefits, according to Gene Mueller, Vice President and Head of Ethylene for Clariant Catalysts. “By combining their process innovation with our proven expertise in zeolite catalyst development and industrial scale-up, we are targeting to accelerate the path to commercialization”, he concludes”. ce/nta
