Aleph Farms plans cultivated meat production facility in Kemptthal
Kemptthal/Rehovot - Aleph Farms plans to produce cultivated beef in Kemptthal. To do so, it is collaborating with The Cultured Hub AG – a consortium including Migros Industrie, Givaudan, and Bühler that is helping the Israeli company with the infrastructure required for market launch.
(CONNECT) Aleph Farms is setting up in Kemptthal in the Swiss canton of Zurich. There, the Israel-headquartered company plans to produce its high-quality steaks using bovine cells from a Black Angus cow named Lucy. Cultured beef production is reportedly more sustainable while also reducing dependence on meat imports and improving animal welfare.
Kemptthal is already home to The Cultured Hub AG, with which Aleph Farms has now signed a memorandum of understanding for a partnership, according to a joint statement from the two businesses. The Cultured Hub is an association of companies that promote startups and technologies for producing cultivated meat, fish, seafood, and other alternative proteins. The consortium includes Migros Industrie, Givaudan, and Bühler. Together, these companies provide the infrastructure required for the market launch of cultured foods.
“This partnership enables the optimum implementation of our global strategy – capital-efficient and deeply rooted in the local market,” Didier Tourbia, co-founder and CEO of Aleph Farms, is quoted as saying. “Our collaboration with The Cultured Hub builds on years of joint work to establish the regulatory and operational foundations for cultivated meat in Switzerland.”
According to Aleph Farms, Migros Industrie invested in the Israeli company back in 2019. In July 2023, Migros Industrie went on to support Aleph Farms with the submission of the first application for regulatory approval of cultivated beef in Switzerland to the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office. Subject to regulatory approval, Aleph Farms plans to start production in Kemptthal and then expand into Europe.
“The company strengthens the role of the canton of Zurich as a location for innovation and brings new momentum to Zurich's growing food ecosystem,” Carmen Walker Späh, Director of Economic Affairs, is quoted as saying about this move. “With Aleph Farms, Kemptthal is well on its way to becoming Switzerland's food innovation hub.” ce/mm
