SBB develops links in large neighboring countries
Bern - After a timetable change on December 14, the Swiss federal railway company SBB is strengthening its offering to Italy, Germany, and France. Its range in north-western Switzerland is being expanded. Maintenance activities and thus also prolonged travel times will continue to increase.
(CONNECT) SBB is strengthening its connections to the large countries neighboring Switzerland. According to an announcement, around two additional trains will travel from Zurich to Milan in each direction with the timetable change of December 14. The existing connection to Bologna will be extended to Florence. Trains from Germany to Brig will be direct in future. The direct links between Germany and Chur will be expanded to four trains per day in both directions. The route from Lausanne to Marseille will be extended in the summer period.
Within Switzerland, the offering in north-western Switzerland in particular will be reinforced. SBB describes this as the “largest expansion of services in 20 years” for the region. For instance, the S-Bahn connecting Basel and Liestal will run every 15 minutes in future, long-distance trains between Basel and Biel every 30 minutes.
Chiasso will have hourly links to the German-speaking part of Switzerland in future. The IC3 between Chur and Zurich will also run every half hour during the week in future.
SBB points out that the expansion will result in increasing maintenance work. This could increase travel times or lead to the need for transfers. ce/stk
