Switzerland collaborates with EU partners for cyber defense training
Brussels/Bern - The Council of the European Union has permitted Switzerland to participate in the Cyber Ranges Federations. This project within the context of European security policy links the platforms of several European countries for cyber defense training. It is being led by Estonia.
(CONNECT) Switzerland is the first country outside of the EU to be involved in the European project Cyber Ranges Federations. The Council of the European Union, which represents the European member states, authorized Switzerland’s involvement on May 20. According to an announcement from the council, Switzerland will bring substantial added value to the project with its Cyber Training Range as well as the Cyber-Defence Campus founded in 2019.
The project within the context of the EU’s Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) in security and defense links national platforms for training in the field of cyber defense. This aims to strengthen the capacity and services of cyber defense, share knowledge from research and development, and facilitate standardization between the various national simulation environments.
The project is being led by Estonia. It currently also involves Belgium, Bulgaria, Finland, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, and Austria. There are more than 60 PESCO projects in total.
According to an announcement, the Federal Council, the Swiss government, approved Switzerland’s involvement on August 21, 2024. It further states that the collaboration is based on a non-binding administrative arrangement and consistent with Swiss neutrality. ce/stk
