Bussnang/Lisbon - Stadler has signed a contract for the delivery of 24 metro trains with Metropolitano de Lisboa, which operates the Lisbon metro system. The contract also contains an option for the delivery of a further 12 trains.
Stadler Rail AG, based in Bussnang in the canton of Thurgau, Switzerland, has signed through its subsidiary in Spain an agreement for the delivery of 24 modern metro trains with the Metropolitano de Lisboa in Portugal. As detailed in a press release issued by the Swiss rail vehicle construction company, the contract is valued at 134 million euros and also contains an option for the delivery of an additional 12 train sets.
This marks the second contract that Stadler has secured from the operator of the metro system in the Portuguese capital. The trains measure 46.9 meters in length, offering room for 90 seated passengers in addition to two wheelchair spaces. The total capacity is 450 passengers overall. The trains are equipped with a modern passenger information system, while large windows provide light and a good view of the above-ground routes. Nine double doors on both sides of the train allow for quick entry and exit.
At present, the first train is undergoing testing on the existing Lisbon metro system, with the new trains set to serve the new Circle Line, which is currently under construction.
“We are very proud that Metropolitano de Lisboa has once again entrusted Stadler with the renovation and modernization of its fleet,” comments Iñigo Parra, Executive Vice President of Stadler Division Spain, in the press release.
Maria Helena Campos, Acting President of Metropolitano de Lisboa, highlights the fact that the procurement of these new trains represents a “major step forward in the modernization of the Lisbon Metro, enhancing service quality and capacity, while also improving the travel experience and mobility within the Lisbon Metropolitan area”. ce/ww
